Separate and Unequal

After reading the book and watching a documentary and a ted talk, I have seen and heard with my own eyes and ears on how different the school system is. It is different with the way we as students are taught and different in where we learn and with whom. In the ted talk the woman talked about she was different from others; attending a school where she had an enormous chance and future at an education but also realized that the kids in her neighborhood went to the public schools and the reason to this is that many parents do not believe in the public school system. They believe that the education received in a public school can be compared to the one where those who pay, pay out of pocket. In reading and watching this you see two union who are supposed to strive tighter are separated. We are still separated by race, color and the economic pay that we receive. When schools were being founded, they were being founded and built off the backs of those who were slaves who cannot receive the same treatment in going to school until much later after all the civil laws were passed. These were schools built on those who could not have the chance to read rite and learn. The separation and unequalness have started since the beginning of this. With this in mind schools were also divided but who wanted to do this and that because public schools only allow those within the zip code area to attend. Although many do not want to attend the public schools in their community, they have no choice because even though public they still only allow people within the community area zip code. Taking form these parents have also wanted to separate from the public schools because they believed their children were not receiving the best education but what they failed to see is that they are separating their children from having culture and allowing them into a school were people who have the same dime in a bag can attend. As those who cannot afford it, they go to public schools. Although parents want their children to exceed in learning, spreading them from a vas culture of different people is not the answer. Apart from learning all this information I had also had to do a group project and although short and brief we all were on point with the information and agreeing on what we learned and talked about how that shocked us and how we see that schools’ systems are really divided. We also did a good job in communicating and having all the work done before time this group is bright and very well to have a conversation with.

  1. Great visuals!

I think your quote: "We are still separated by race, color and the economic pay that we receive," is so poignant. I can see that you're all making connections between education and politics. It has been a political issue since the first school was built, so it's important to make those connections and figure out how to challenge the traditional, hazardous model of education, particularly within our urban communities.
