My Intorduction Diana Rivera

Hello to everyone in this class, my name is Diana Rivera I am senior at NJCU and my major is Psychology. My interests include doing yoga, traveling, eating new cultural food, and helping out my community as much as I can with the help of my friends and those I am close with. The reason I took this class was because of the course description it really surprised me of how literacy and books can be a powerful move. By this I mean books hold almost all of what we know and sometimes a good book can just make it or break while you're learning because it is what sticks with you most of your life time.

My first part of literature was a poetry book from my older sister. As a child she would read me many poetry stories or short ones from different books or she herself would make some of her own. This was me first being introduced to books in general. Although it is not a history book or anything special, poems or love poetry is what really spoke to me and peeked my interests in books. Because of my sister I was able to continue to this sort of love for literacy. This helped me develop into a person who rather read and write than do other type of courses and this itself helps me cope with things outside of school settings. As a child I just love to hear all the words and how some rhymed while others were more packed with full emotions but as a child I sill didn't understand.

Around middle school Im sure everyone had a love for twilight and other supernatural stores and that's when I had my eye opened to different types of literacy works. The romances ones, the supernatural ones, the ones filled with action all these books peeked an interest as a young kid in middle school. But interest soon to change when one gets older. I liked to read during lunch hours because it was a fun way to destress with the things going around and even till now I still do the same but read a chapter or two after I am done with my assignments.

As I continue my love for literacy has not changed but instead of reading or buying books from top authors or any type of stores that sell books I read books from people within the community or around the world that write up their own stories. Just like the person who wrote the book After she started off on a small web paged and from there many people like myself contributed a small time owner of a story and had created something incredible with it. I love to see what others imagination can come up with. I care  more now for the small communities of writers and appreciate their hard earned time to create content and creavity for many others who love to read. As I continue with literacy I ave been writing my own little story o the side of all that is happening. Because of covid I thought what perfect time then to write a book. This is how I incorporate literature in my life.

  1. Hi, Diana--this is Professor Leibowitz. Thank you so much for sharing. You mentioned your love for eating cultural food. What are some of your favorite cuisines? I think food is such a large part of culture and identity, and an important link to literacy, as well.

I think your love of literature and stories will greatly influence your role in psychology, simply because whether you want to be a psychologist or work as a therapist, you're listening to stories everyday. Listening is a huge part of literacy--active listening can become the catalyst for a productive conversation. Since your job, as a listener, will be to understand how to help your clients, that dialogue is crucial to literacy.

This is a really lovely entry, and I appreciate the joy you have for reading. Thank you for sharing how literacy influenced your life.

One question: Team Edward or Team Jacob? lol
