As American as Public School

Assignment Part 3

Reading this part of the book has opened my eyes about how important school was going to stand for. Now a days we have many students who do not want to get up and go to school but little do they really know how the struggle was to keep public schools open and have the education pass down for years to come. For many who were coming to states the old immigrants and the new ones did not see much eye to eye but when it came to the education part for those who did not have much as others, they wanted the same equal chance for their children and grandchildren to come. They wanted this opportunity and turn it into something great for the kids to either become a doctor, lawyer, or anything that was a good field.

As many who came here, they wanted to reach new empowerments and many new social reforms to work in public schools, living conditions and those who have jobs. This was due to everyone wanted to have equal opportunities because although many did attend school it still wasn’t a glorious thing because about eighty percent of children wanted to rather work than attend school. For many new children it could have been a struggle due to a new change and a new language and learning it the hard way.

Something me and my group agreed on was that ESL classes weren’t available at the time but instead they had classes for those with disabilities. To receive and have an equal chance and there is nothing wrong with that but the way most teachers would treat the children that couldn’t talk English they would smack with the ruler or something. One student from the book stood out to me because she moved from Mexico to California and there she got smacked and the teacher told her to not speak Spanish English only because she was in America. Communicating is a big deal and is often at times hard for those who English was never their first language. In the book they did have teachers but not many who are able to communicate with so many in order to get them on the right track.

Although this was an easy thing to do separately with our own work, my group member although it was me and another person we got along right away and were able to get the work done together. We were able to focus on what had to be done and help one another on what could be done better or changed in order to fit well. Me and Gabriel were able to communicate through text messages and our emails because that was a faster way to communicate and correct each other the work assignments. Another thing that helped a lot was being on google docs to work on the group assignment, because here we were able to read and talk about what was missing and re write it. Although we could not reach our other group member, I believe we did a good job and was able to complete the task.

  1. Diana, really strong points. I think your analysis of English Language Learners is still relevant today. We still do not provide the proper resources for language learners, yet the expectations remain the same. Those false "principles" are put into place as a form of oppression, which secures the people who are in positions of power. The thing is, the resources can be utilized if the power structure is dismantled. Think about the ways in which that might take place.
